Hungry Bears Enter the Human Food Web

After an exceptionally dry western winter depleted berries, grasses, nuts, and other natural forage, bears entered U.S. towns and buildings in record numbers in search of food. Wildlife agencies reported thousands of encounters and many bear deaths as animals were euthanized, struck, shot, or otherwise killed around people. The descent begins where drought and development meet a bear's powerful sense of smell. A calorie-rich human food source can change more than one night's route: repeated access may alter seasonal behavior and physiology.

A study of free-ranging female black bears in Colorado traced a chain from human food to denning behavior and then to cellular aging. Stable-isotope signatures in hair served as an indicator of reliance on human foods. Bears with more of that signal tended to hibernate for shorter periods; bears with shorter average hibernation showed faster attrition of telomeres, the protective DNA structures at chromosome ends that can act as markers of cellular aging. The study does not say that one raid on a trash can instantly ages a bear, nor does it establish every mechanism in the chain. It identifies linked patterns in a real population and discusses reduced cell turnover or other maintenance processes as possible reasons hibernation may slow telomere loss. The implication is unusually intimate: a human food subsidy can reshape a wild animal's calendar, and that behavioral change may register at the level of its chromosomes. A dumpster becomes part of an ecological and molecular system.
